UN Human Rights Committee declares Spain guilty of tortures in the case of María Atxabal

The United Nations Human Rights Committee (UNHRC) has judged that Basque citizen María Atxabal (pictured, center) was actually tortured by the Guardia Civil (military police corps) in 1996. For that reason it demands from Spain to open an investigation, to repair the damage caused to the victim and to provide her with free health attention to treat the post-traumatic stress she suffers since then.

The high committee also finds that isolation regime imposed arbitrarily on political arrests favors torture.
