The strike has been called by all major labor unions: the pro-communist All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and the Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU), the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC, akin to the ruling Congress Party), the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (allied of the conservative Bharatiya Janata Party). Smaller unions affiliated to the right-wing Shiv Sena or the Muslim League are also taking part, as well as hundreds of local and unaffiliated unions.
The reasons for such a broad-spectrum subcontinental-sized walk out (I wish we had that kind of coordination in Europe, really) is against the growing misery of the common people, the low wages, the lengthy journeys of 10 hours or more, the miserable working conditions, job cuts, high unemployment...
The unions attempted to dialogue with the Government or even the Parliament but were not even listened to.
