TVA ex-administrator Freeman accuses Nuclear Industry of being a cult: "kill nuclear before it kills us"

S. David Freeman, former administrator of the Tennessee Valley Authority energy giant, warns: kill nuclear before it kills us.

He denounces that nuclear industry insiders are like a cult: they believe that nuclear energy is safe and behave irrationally according to that faith.

Bisphenol A severely disrupts fetal epigenetics

Water bottle containing bisphenol A
The most controversial chemical compound bisphenol A is found in many plastics, including sometimes those used as food or water containers. This study adds to the long list of known harms of this chemical, which nevertheless remains widely allowed.

Martha Susiarjo et al., Bisphenol A Exposure Disrupts Genomic Imprinting in the Mouse. PLoS Genetics 2013. Open access → LINK [doi:10.1371/journal.pgen.1003401]

Abstract

Exposure to endocrine disruptors is associated with developmental defects. One compound of concern, to which humans are widely exposed, is bisphenol A (BPA). In model organisms, BPA exposure is linked to metabolic disorders, infertility, cancer, and behavior anomalies. Recently, BPA exposure has been linked to DNA methylation changes, indicating that epigenetic mechanisms may be relevant. We investigated effects of exposure on genomic imprinting in the mouse as imprinted genes are regulated by differential DNA methylation and aberrant imprinting disrupts fetal, placental, and postnatal development. Through allele-specific and quantitative real-time PCR analysis, we demonstrated that maternal BPA exposure during late stages of oocyte development and early stages of embryonic development significantly disrupted imprinted gene expression in embryonic day (E) 9.5 and 12.5 embryos and placentas. The affected genes included Snrpn, Ube3a, Igf2, Kcnq1ot1, Cdkn1c, and Ascl2; mutations and aberrant regulation of these genes are associated with imprinting disorders in humans. Furthermore, the majority of affected genes were expressed abnormally in the placenta. DNA methylation studies showed that BPA exposure significantly altered the methylation levels of differentially methylated regions (DMRs) including the Snrpn imprinting control region (ICR) and Igf2 DMR1. Moreover, exposure significantly reduced genome-wide methylation levels in the placenta, but not the embryo. Histological and immunohistochemical examinations revealed that these epigenetic defects were associated with abnormal placental development. In contrast to this early exposure paradigm, exposure outside of the epigenetic reprogramming window did not cause significant imprinting perturbations. Our data suggest that early exposure to common environmental compounds has the potential to disrupt fetal and postnatal health through epigenetic changes in the embryo and abnormal development of the placenta.

A very short graphic history of late Capitalism

Ever heard of surplus value, Thatcher & Reagan or the Credit Bubble? I bet you did. What you might not have realized is that, in the golden decades of Capitalism, at the middle and third quarter of the 20th century, the system, deeply trampled in a protracted class war at home and abroad, decided to effectively apply semi-socialist measures allowing a much greater share of this surplus value to be shared by workers.

These figures, which apply only to the USA but surely have strong parallels elsewhere within the core Capitalist Empire, come from Campaign for America's Future (via Hullabaloo), a self-described progressive site, but most informative in any case.

The most revealing chart is this one:

We can easily see how in the 1940s, with the war effort and all that (heh, not the New Deal but many years later in fact) the 10% bourgeois elite took more than just a haircut in their share of the surplus value, from c. 45% to 35% or less. Those ten or fifteen percentile points were enough to keep most of the popular classes content and hopeful for the following decades.

However, since the 1980s, that interested generosity of the 20th century capitalism, was dramatically reversed and today the levels of wealth concentration among the bourgeois elites are record high, what implies that the working class is having a very bad time, as we know too well.

Why?, could well a naive person ask. Because the top bourgeois elite is taking it all in their bottomless pockets, as they always did except (partly) for that anomalous parenthesis of the Cold War.

Other parallel charts, all of which are coincident in pointing to Reagan as the trigger culprit:

Share of workers in the benefits

Less income means less savings
What meant disparage growth of credit while tolerated (the bubble)

So now you know the secret of the "happy capitalism" of mid-century: a bourgeois-managed "Robin Hood" strategy of sorts in order to prevent the masses from siding with Communism. Once they estimated that the danger had passed, they removed the benefits, feeding a gigantic credit bubble as buffer. Bubble that eventually burst, of course.

So here we are back in the 1920s, so to say, just that almost everything else has changed. That's the cycle of Materialist Dialectics, which is not circular but spiral. Spiral that unavoidably leads to the end of the Capitalist regime.

Greece: updates on the censorship push against free media

While absolutely nothing is done to stop the police collaboration with the Nazi pogroms or to banish the Nazi party Golden Dawn, which attacks immigrants, Roma, Jews, gays and leftists equally, the Greek coalition government moved yesterday to muzzle several key free information resorts: Indymedia Athens and two free radio stations.

It is important to underline that this phylo-Nazi government of Samaras is supported and sustained by two smaller allegedly "socialist" parties: the shameless PASOK and the petty opportunist DIMAR. Would elections be held today it is very likely that the real left would win, so we can clearly talk of an illegitimate government: legal but without real democratic support.

It is also important to remember what happened in the 1920s and 30s, when the conservative parties of all Europe effectively supported the rise of fascism, often becoming themselves into the new fascist backbone, while the Bersnteinian "social-democrats" played most shameful roles of facilitators, when not direct accomplices.

They continued doing it after WWII, supporting the fascist-terrorist regimes of Salazar and Franco in Iberia and establishing new ones in Turkey and Greece, and of course elsewhere around the World.

No doubt they hope that these extremely dangerous Nazi movements they are so dearly supporting today will be their brutal backup if the farce of bourgeoise democracy fails to impede the rise of true socialists to power, first of all in Greece.

Updates on the closure of free media in Greece (from From the Greek Streets):

1. General update (source: FTGS):

Athens Indymedia, 98FM and Radio Entasi repressed by the greek government: updates

On April 11th, 2013 the university authorities of the Athens Polytechnic (NTUA) cut off the electricity connection to the servers hosting Athens Indymedia and two radio stations of the antagonist movement – 98FM and Radio Entasi. On the next day, a demonstration was called at the Athens Polytechnic campus in Zografou.

2. Another more extensive update: Indymedia goes on at other addresses (source: FTGS):

Athens indymedia, 98FM and Radio Entasi repressed by the greek government: the story so far

(ATHENS, 2013-04-12 2:33 pm UTC). Yesterday afternoon, access to the website of Indymedia Athens was disabled by National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) technical staff, apparently as a result of political pressure by minister of public order, Nikos Dendias.
At 3 pm (1 pm UTC) on thursday, the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) network operations center (NOC) carried out an order by the university’s president Simos E. Simopoulos to cut Internet connectivity to a server hosted within the university network. This server was providing access to Indymedia Athens (https://athens.indymdia.org/), to the online radio stream and website of Radio98FM (http://www.radio98fm.org), a self-organised radio station, which was broadcasting from inside NTUA, as well as Radio Entasi.
Recent Twitter communication indicates that the NTUA rectors council may have bowed to political pressure: MP Adonis Georgiadis of the New Democracy party has congratulated minister of public order, Nikos Dendias, for taking down the Indymedia website: https://twitter.com/AdonisGeorgiadi/status/322424852118138880
Sources close to the operators of Indymedia Athens indicate that political pressure on NTUA’s rectorial council to shut down Indymedia Athens against has increased remarkably during the past days.
However, no in-advance notification was given to Indymedia or the radio stations, and an official statement by the universities’ principal as to which legal process he was following, if any, has yet to be provided. The rector’s council alongside legal advisors will hold a meeting on the matter of Athens IMC and the free radios hosted in university premises tonight at 6 pm (local time).
In response to the shutdown, Indymedia Athens and other affected parties have called for a protest near the Athens University campus in Zogragou, which has started today at 1 pm (local time).
In the meantime, Indymedia Athens continues to be available via the Tor anonimization network at http://gutneffntqonah7l.onion/ (this address is only available when running the Tor software). The following Tor gateways allow access to it from standard web browsers:

Indymedia, which is also referred to as Independent Media Centre (IMC), originated during Seattle protests against the World Trade Organisation in 1999 and provides open publishing platforms that allows anybody to contribute. It is associated with the global justice movement, which is critical of neoliberalism and its associated institutions. A list of Indymedia centers around the world is available at http://contact.indymedia.org/cities.php (the global website at www.indymedia.org is currently unavailable due to technical issues)

3. Radio Entasi denounces the collaboration of Nazis (SKAI media corp.) and government in their forced closure and that they continue broadcasting at 100.1 FM frequency now (source FTGS):

“Taking over responsibility”: statement by the Radio Entasi collective on its repression by the greek government

english original
Taking over responsibility…
We take over responsibility for the explosive ideas, the free spreading and conveyance of those, the formation of a free and direct-democratic radio assembly, the disturbance of domestic peace.
We, the assembly born on the days of the December riot of 2008 –which you would so much like to forget-, broadcasting on 100,1 fm.
In the 5 years of Radio Entasi, we saw the movement passing through many phases, we saw society resisting, instituting, and abandoning the traditional ways of politics. We saw the economic crisis evolving in a crisis of values of a system that can’t represent anybody no more , because there is nothing common anymore to be represented. Whole parts of society are being placed in a condition of exception : from the strikers in the Public Transportations to the villages in Skuries, Chalkidiki, people are being outlawed. Radio Entasi could not be an exemption. After all, we were present. Radio Entasi was there, on the riot of December 2008, on the occupied Syntagma square in 2011, and every time where the heart of the movement was beating, giving the 100,1 fm to the voice of the oppressed.
And while everybody knows that the radiowaves of Entasi are at the disposal of every fighting person, and while we respect our audience even in the KW that we are using, in contrast to the ‘legal’ radio stations and the cell phone antennas, the Law ignores that. As it also ignores the true essence of the university as a public, free space for the communication of ideas . The Law wants to muzzle Radio Entasi.
With an indictment and a lawsuit, the SKAI media company (which broadcasts ‘silence’ from the Parnitha mountain, illegally on 100,6 fm, to ‘protect’ the 100,3 frequency, whose shareholders promote fascists of G.D., openly or secretly), wants for us to shut up. Shut up? So that only the chandlers of solidarity, the grabbers of frequencies, the financiers of the new fascist battalions, the pimps of the environment and the forgers of information could speak on the fm? They are deluded.
Let the SKAI group, it’s advertisers and the authorities know that freedom for us is not a product to sell in a good deal with the customers, nor is it a trick to increase our ratings.
Freedom is our value and our project.
Radio Entasi will not silence! ! We continue to broadcast radically on 100,1 fm, interfering in the dominant frequencies.

The Nazi friends of Angela Merkel?

Antinazis Getafe blog[es] has just published a photo report of what seems to be a much younger and leaner Angela Merkel with a bunch of skinhead and other friends, one of whom makes a Nazi salute. The photos are dated to 1992 or 1993 in Magdeburg.

I am not able to confirm or deny the plausibility of what is being implied by the photo-report but I believe that the matter demands diffusion in order to be researched in depth. Therefore here there are the four photos, all of which seem to be taken in the same context and with the same characteristic building as background:

No background info whatsoever is provided with the photos, so I can't comment further at this moment.

Merkel being a barely camouflaged Nazi herself could explain a lot of what is happening in Europe these days indeed.

Update (Sep 25): this article[de] explains that Merkel and Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger (in red in the third photo), then ministers of the German Government, visited the youth club Elbterrassen, which was then classified by the local antifascist resistance as a Nazi hideout. In that same club or maybe another one (not sure because of the automatic translation) a young antifascist had been murdered just months before.

The exact intentions of Merkel with this visit are very much unclear but what is clear is that the German Federal Republic is deeply involved with Nazi organizations, often armed and terrorist, and that it offers strong protection to the Nazis with the pretext of freedom of speech (hate speech too?) They only care about repressing the Left.

Athens Indymedia and 98 FM under repression: statement by the Indymedia Athens collective

Repression shall not pass!

Three of the mediums of counter-information of the antagonist movement (athens.indymedia.org, 98FM and Radio Entasi/Tension) received the repression of the state on the afternoon of Thursday 11th of April.

Their internet connection was shut down, following pressure by the attorney general.

During a period in which the entire society struggles even to breath due to the financial, political and social repression, the smaller or larger local nodes of resistance, the smaller or larger worker struggles are refreshing and hopeful; they are those that carry along the ignite of the revolution, which inspire and seed the subversive, radical ideas for us to tear down, once and for all, the world of exploitation…

At this exact moment, and because the real terrorists are terrorised by social resistance, authority attempts to impose the communicative darkness of the established media.

The gagging and the repression of the mediums of counter-information shall not pass in the back pages of their dirty papers and their stations.

Our response shall overcome the ridiculous celebrations of the fasistois and those in power. The mediums of counter-information are our own mediums, they are the voice of our own struggles that show us the way for the world that we want.

We call all people in struggle to a gathering on Friday, April 12th at 1pm, at the central square of the Polytechnic campus (Polytechneioupoli) of Zografou.

608 from Akadimias
242 from Katehaki station

I'm getting lots of mercantile spam, sometimes as insultingly annoying as to post propaganda of home-eviction services under an article denouncing the abuses of banksters, so I'm moderating comments beforehand.

Sorry but I see no other option.

USA: most dangerous hydrogen release at Hanford nuclear waste site

A most dangerously explosive release of hydrogen took place at the severely damaged Hanford nuclear waste site in Oregon, USA. Hydrogen is highly explosive and such release could certainly initiate a catastrophic explosion in the already polluting and rotten nuclear waste facility.

Andalusia moves to suppress the plague of empty homes and foreclosure abuses

According to the new regional law, to go through routine parliament procedure in the following weeks, companies like banks or real state speculators which keep empty homes will have to pay large fines, up to €9000 per empty home. More than 700,000 homes are unoccupied in Andalusia, most of which belong to banks and similarly parasitic companies which speculate with the basic needs of the people.

The Andalusian government could even temporarily expropriate homes under foreclosure threat in order to guarantee their residents continuity of their housing rights (yes, the right to a decent home is a "fundamental right" according to the Spanish Constitution, although this is almost never applied by courts nor legislators).

Greece: 2000 immigrants go in hunger strike in concentration camps

Some 2000 immigrants kept in the so-called "detention camps" instituted by the quasi-fascist government of Samaras have begun a hunger strike in protest for the deplorable conditions they suffer in them, including torture.

Members of a group called the Union Against Racism and Fascist Violence held a press conference in Athens on Monday to explain the situation at the detention centres. They said police stations are being converted into makeshift detention centres and accused officials of covering up incidents of abuse and even torture.

Local immigrant community leaders who also spoke at the press conference called on authorities to give them permission to visit with hunger-striking migrants at the detention centers and to provide them access to doctors and lawyers.

Greece: Nazi attack against another hospital frustrated by Romani reaction

The infamous Greek Nazis tried to attack yet another public hospital, targeting private nurses hired often by families to look after their sick and who may be foreigners. However this time a group of Roma who saw them and feared they might be the target foiled the Nazi skirmish by denouncing them to police, who did intervene in this particular incident (too often they just collaborate with the Nazis), however it does not seem as the terrorists were arrested or anything either.

The Nazi terrorist squad was led by MP Dimitris Koukoutsis. While he denied that the Roma were the target of his terror tactics, he also said that they are "criminals in their DNA" and that therefore he won't treat them as equals.

Obituary: José Luis Sampedro

Writer, philosopher and economist José Luis Sampedro died on Sunday at his home at the most venerable age of 96. Of deep humanist and communist libertarian ideas, Sampedro worked most of his life as professor of economic science, writing a number of works on the matter, some very recently, but he is much better known as fictional author (for example: The Etruscan Smile).

He fought with the Anarchists in the Catalan/Spanish Revolution of 1936-37. He was eventually elected member of the Academy of the Spanish Language, owning the seat F.

Last year he announced the nearing end of Capitalism and what he calls The Age of Money, claiming that younger people already are one step beyond Capitalism.

Basque Country: police arbitrarily forbids protest before the home of politician

The Platform of Mortgage Affected People (PAH) organized a protest before the home of Leopoldo Barreda, MP by the Spanish-nationalist and ultra-reactionary People's Party, in demand of approval of the popular legislative initiative on foreclosures debated these days in the Spanish Congress and against the lack of action against banksters' abuses. Police arbitrarily forced them to move away 300 meters.

This protest mode before politician's homes, demanding them to actually represent the people and not just the interest of some mafiosi, is known as scratching ("escraches" in Spanish, obviously from English).

The text, the man holds (click to expand) reads: scratching is the near-last peaceful attempt of a people that demands to be heard. Those representatives who cannot bear the closeness to electors must quit. In democracy it is the people who rules.

On Thursday they are calling another protest at the general assembly of the BBK, public-owned Basque savings bank that owns 53% of Kutxabank, which is heavily implicated in murderous foreclosures and evictions. Somehow the directives of BBK managed not to have a single scheduled minute dedicated to Kutxabank at all, let alone the foreclosures.

Non-obituary: the witch is dead, people went out to party

Not in many decades has this happened, not at least since the days of the French Revolution or the popular hanging of Mussolini. Very rarely the death of a key political leader was so much celebrated. In all Britain and Northern Ireland groups of people wen out to drink for her to rot in Hell.

Example from Leeds:

Other videos at El Norte de Irlanda[es].

Thatcher began pumping air in the ice-cream and continued her career by pumping air into the economy, creating the speculative credit bubble to feed the parasitic-sadistic system by which private monopolistic companies are paid by people's taxes resulting in hideous services and the total loss of division between the res publica and bloodsucking capitalism.

We are still living under Thatcher's Hell and I can only hope that her physical death announces the death of this horrible decadent suicidal social system I had the bad luck to live under.

May you die a billion painful deaths along with your friends Pinochet and Reagan, witch!

USA: Arkansas oil spill diverted to lake to hide it from the media - many health problems arising

Lake Conway before the spill
(antycopyright by Kfasimpaur)
From The Raw Story (via EneNews):

Activists with the group Tar Sands Blockade published new videos on Sunday showing oil from the Arkansas pipeline rupture purportedly diverted from a residential neighborhood into a wetland area to keep it out sight and, most importantly, out of the media.

While it’s not clear if the oil was intentionally moved into the wetland, the company says it is cleaning pavement with power washing devices, which could cause some of the oil to be pushed off neighborhood streets and into other areas.

Activists also interviewed a local resident who claimed the oil has continued “flowing” into Lake Conway since the spill happened.

A letter sent by ExxonMobil to residents of Mayflower on March 31 claims the oil did not reach Lake Conway.

“I don’t have allergies,” a man who lives on Lake Conway told tar sands activists. “But now my sinuses are bothering me. My throat’s bothering me. My eyes water constantly. But they [Exxon] act like nothing’s wrong. They don’t have to live here, we do. And we’re not moving just because of them.”

The activists noted that they were turned away from the area several times before by police and Exxon spill cleanup workers, but they returned on Saturday just before sundown and managed to sneak in to capture footage of the oiled wetlands. In two separate videos, nearby residents say they’ve been made sick my the spill, which has tremendously affected their air quality.

Definition of "political prisoner"

Basque political cartoonist Tasio brings us today (at Gara) this informative piece:

Translation: Amnesty International defines as "political prisoner" to "any prisoner whose process contains a significant political element, be it the motivation of his/her actions, the actions themselves or the motivation of the authorities". And specifies that one of the examples of "political prisoner" is that of "a member of an armed political group who is accused of treason or 'subversion'". Amnesty International notes that "governments often claim that in their country there are no political prisoners", just criminals.

The guy at the right is Spanish Interior Minister, Jorge Fernández Díaz, who has been as of late threatening with persecuting and imprisoning everyone who talks of "political prisoners".

NATO murders more Afghan civilians, mostly children

A NATO bombing in the Kunar province of Afghanistan resulted in the killing of at least ten children and two women, all them non- fighters. The victims were inside their homes when these were bomber. NATO talks of "human shields" but it is obvious that if you bomb inhabited villages, you will kill civilians, so this pretext is just an obvious propaganda lie.

Bahrain: repression increases against the village near the F1 Grand Prix

Again massive pop events of the sports area (I don't consider motor racing as sport at all but many do) serve as pretext for escalation of terrorist violence of governments against the People.

From the Bahrain Center for Human Rights:

Bahrain: Escalated Crackdown in Villages Close to F1 Grand Prix Event in Preparation for Race

Date: 7th April 2012

The Bahrain Center for Human Rights expresses grave concern in regards to the escalated security measures, increased house raids and arbitrary arrests of citizens living in villages located near the Bahrain International Circuit, which is due to host the Formula 1 race on 21st April 2013.

The BCHR received numerous reports and documented cases of house raids by masked men in civilian clothing around midnight and at dawn, which have resulted in arbitrary arrests in villages close to the Bahrain International Circuit like Darkulaib and Shahrakan and in Hamad Town roundabout 17.

During the first week of April 2013, 10 youth including minors aging (16 to 25 years) were arrested during house raids, among them, Mohammad Abu-Zuhaira.

Family of one of the prisoners stated that at dawn a police officer along with masked men raided their house and asked to see the ID of one of the family members and asked for him. While the family went to call the person wanted, the masked men followed the family inside the house to the room he was in. They then arrested him without showing an arrest warrant. The family did not know of their son’s whereabouts for 3 days. When the family went to the Hamad Town Police Station asking for him, they denied knowing his whereabouts. (1)

The Bahrain Center for Human Rights believes that the escalated house raids and arbitrary arrests of youth in villages near the Bahrain International Circuit is aimed to spread fear and force silence among citizens to minimize protests and any media coverage of the continuous violations by the Bahrain authorities during the F1 Race.

Brian Dooley from Human Rights 1st in response to billionaire and president of Formula One Bernie Ecclestone, stated:

“One issue is whether or not human rights violations might be happening as a result of the race being there,” Dooley adds, “If the regime arrests people in order to intimidate others from peacefully protesting around Formula One, then the organizers, participants, and sponsors really need to say something about that.” (2)

The Bahrain International Circuit - host of Formula1 in Bahrain- is yet to be held accountable for violations conducted in 2011; namely sacking quarter of its staff post the pro-democracy protests and reportedly torturing staff in it’s premises. (2) To add to that, Bahraini car racing champion Mohammed Al-Khunaizie was arrested.

Basque Country: a huge mutltitude demands again the return of prisoners

12,000 people marched yesterday in Bilbao demanding once again the return to the Basque Country of all political prisoners scattered through the French and Spanish residual empires.

The march was opened by three banners that demanded the end of the doctrine 197/2006 (which extends indefinitely the prison terms for political hostages), the liberation of ill prisoners and the return to the Basque Country of all them.

Basque Country: more than 10,000 demonstrate in Pamplona against the rotten Spanish Nationalist government

Under the rhythm of the popular song: Barcina vete ya! (Barcina go home already!) at least 10,000 Navarrese citizens demonstrated through the streets of the historical Basque capital city demanding the resignation of the whole government, which stands in minority but with the passive support of the pro-Spanish "socialists" (Blairites) which has already announced they will abstain in the motion of no confidence which is being voted this week.

The Barcina chartered government and its predecessors are extremely corrupt and have sold out to their private benefits important social assets like the savings bank CAN. The people is very very angry and with very good reasons.
