Wallmapu: Mapuche People take what is theirs

In several areas of Ngulu Mapu (Mapuche Country) the people are taking what is collectively theirs and was robbed by the imperialist Chilean state and their colonial private agents since 1880.

The recuperation includes private ranches, forest plantations and lands attributed to the state. The Chilean media has remained silent.

Argentina: Mapuches occupy the National Institute of Indigenous Affairs

Dozens of citizens of the Mapuche Nation (arbitrarily divided between Chile and Argentina) occupied an office in the National Institute of Indigenous Affairs (INAI) in the capital Buenos Aires. Personalities like Peace Nobel Prize Fernando Pérez Esquivel, members of Mothers of May Square and Alfredo Echegoyen, co-president of the Permanent Commission for Human Rights, joined them but were kept outside the building by the authorities.

The Mapuche community within the Argentine state borders constituted themselves according to the law as Indigenous Community in 2006, but since then the state has not done anything to make it official.

The indigenous representatives remain in the building and have asked the population to join them.

Mapuche prisoners on hunger strike for 72 days in danger

Mapuche flag
I did not know until today of this new hunger strike of Mapuche prisoners, again for reason of being judged under the infamous anti-terrorist law. They claim to be judged under normal law by a normal impartial tribunal.

The striking prisoners are four and one of them, Ramón Llanquileo, is in serious condition according to physicians.

They were recently moved from the prison of Angol (in the Mapuche Country) to Santiago.

Last year a large number of Mapuche prisoners carried on another hunger strike for the same reasons, achieving their goals. However the anti-terrorist law remains in effect.

The Mapuche nation was de facto independent until 1883, when Chile conquered the country also known as Araucania. Today they struggle for self-rule but specially for the return of the lands robbed to their communities.

Last Mapuche prisoners end hunger strike

I mentioned last week the end of the hunger strike by 28 of the 38 Mapuche prisoners accused under the Pinochetist anti-terrorist law in Chile. Now I can confirm that all other prisoners but one have abandoned the protest as the government has accepted to re-qualify all accusations.

The accusations will be replaced by regular penal ones. The Mapuche movement is not totally persuaded of the goodness of these concessions but have accepted for humanitarian reasons.

One of the prisoners, minor Luis Marileo, imprisoned at Chol Chol, remains on hunger strike until he is effectively notified personally of the dropping of the anti-terrorist charges against him.

Mapuche prisoners end hunger strike after obtaining concessions

According to Gara, most Mapuche prisoners, who have held a hunger strike for more than two months, have abandoned it after the Chilean government accepted to reform the anti-terrorist law.

The agreement includes retrieval of standing accusations based on the anti-terrorist law, that the accused will be judged by civilian judges in the term of five days and correct the attributions of military justice.

The government also said that it has not anymore the conviction that the prisoners can be accused of terrorism.

The comuneros in Angol prison will only today, except one who has joined the agreement already, decide if they quit the hunger strike.
