Students assault the Senate in Rome against budget cuts

Protected behind shields representing emblematic books from Petrarca, Boccaccio, Machiavelli, Petronius, Plato or even Isaac Asimov and the very Italian Constitution, Italian students attempted to take over the Senate.

They were already achieving it when, in the very lobby of the Palazzo Madama (that hosts the Italian Senate), one of them fainted. It was only this incident what stopped the students short from entering the upper chamber, as they decided to evacuate in order to allow the emergency services to attend their comrade.

They continued their protest outside the Senate, crying for the resignation of  Education Minister Maria Stella Gelmini, who has promoted this draconian reform. One of the protesters was arrested after police intervened.

Later the demonstration went to the residence of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and then to the Lower House. While marching through Rome, there were further clashes with police but it is unknown if more students were arrested.
