European freedom of travel suspended in Portugal before NATO summit

Portugal has suspended temporarily the Schengen accords by which European citizens can travel without passport or visa freely through most of EU and some associated countries (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and the micro-states).

The only reason for this unusual measure, which includes raising alert state to maximum level and deployment of some 7000 security personnel, is the NATO summit to be held in Lisbon this weekend.

There are anyhow demonstrations called in Lisbon anyhow, the main one today at 15:00 (WET), that is: just some 45 minutes from now.
