People in the state of Spain is angry at the visit of the Pope and specially about the fact that it is being paid not by Christians or the hyper-wealthy Vatican State but by taxpayer's money. They are also angry that the theoretical principles of non-confessionality are being ignored by all public powers in favor of an institution of such bad name (specially here, where it is directly associated with Fascism and the Catholic theocracy that forged this dysfunctional state), which is known for pederasty, homophobia and misogyny, among other deplorable attitudes.
They are also upset that several million euros of public money is being wasted in this event which is propaganda for the most reactionary ideas and false claims (meh, they should be all jailed for running such a gigantic scam: pay now get paradise when you're dead), when there are so many social needs it could be used for.
So they are protesting and pretty much so.
Even grassroots Catholics are against it. From their point of view this is the kind of stuff Jesus was against: wasting money in rituals and propaganda instead of using it to help those in need.
But what is atrocious is that a state that calls itself secular, with a government that says itself socialist, is paying for this

I have difficulties embedding a blip.tv video of a quite numerous demo in Galicia and how police impeded it, eventually charging against the protesters without any warning.

Update, based on BBC:
Only 14% of Spaniards attend regularly to Church, in spite of 74% still claiming to be Catholics. It must be for weddings only because the same fraction agrees with same-sex marriage (which is legal in Spain since 2006).
Shopkeepers in Santiago are frustrated that the Pope's visit has attracted nearly nobody to the city.
Gay activists plan to hold a mass kissing protest at Barcelona.
My own appreciation is that people does not migrate to other confessions they are just fine being effectively agnostic, the ultramontane attitude of the Church in issues like gay rights or contraception, not to mention that they are still tightly associated with the most fascist elements in the state, makes them a pointless residue from the Dark Ages and that is something most people are well aware of. But alternative religions are not the slightest more modern in almost all cases. I know some who joined a syncretic peyote-communion sect and Gypsies are now mostly Evangelical (Protestant) but otherwise only immigrants have some religious perception, except the generally agnostic Chinese, of course.
This trend has been going on for many decades now (I quit church when I was 11, in 1979 or 1980 and nearly everybody I know of my age is agnostic to militant atheist).
Update from Ciudad Futura:
That's what happens when you disagree with them. One of the victims of the random and arbitrary police aggression against the demo against Ratzinger (alias Pope Benedict II, former member of the Nazi Party and chief of the Inquisition).
