Anti-war protests shatter Ukraine

Growing massive protests are taking place in Ukraine against the draft and the war. The citizens of the Eastern European country do not want that their young men be enslaved to kill other Ukrainians, "we want peace!", they demand.

The above video, shot in Voloka, seems to be just one instance of the growing mass protests that are taking place through the country against the Fascist-imposed Civil War.

USA: violent repression and political persecution against anti-Petraeus protesters

This video shows just some of the violence that police used against demonstrators who protested peacefully against a conference by former Middle East proconsul and CIA chief David Petraeus in CUNY university.

An eyewitness description of police brutality follows:
“As students were chanting ‘War Criminal Petraeus Out of CUNY Now,’ I was shocked to see several police officers grab and brutalize one of the demonstrators,” said City College student Yexenia Vanegas. “This was completely unprovoked, as demonstrators made clear that they were there to defend our university in a peaceful protest.” The attack occured in front of CUNY’s Macaulay Honors College, where Petraeus has been appointed to teach a class on public policy. “Protestors were marching in a circle on the sidewalk and chanting, but the police forced them into the street and then charged. One of the most brutal things I saw was that five police officers slammed a Queens College student face down to the pavement across the street from Macaulay, put their knees on his back and he was then repeatedly kneed in the back,” said Hunter student Michael Brian. The student was one of those pointed out by “white shirt” officers, then seized and brutalized. A Latina woman student was heaved through the air and slammed to the ground.

The repression did not stop there. Six students were arrested and now face arbitrary charges.

England: at least 22 antimilitarists arrested in nonviolent action against nuclear warheads

Antimilitarist activists chained themselves in blockade of the roads leading to AWE Burghfield (nuclear weapons factory near Reading). At least 22 were arrested.

The protesters want to denounce the renewal of the British nuclear arsenal (Trident missiles, mounted on submarines), whose cost to the British taxpayer is of some 100 billion pounds.

The protest was coordinated by Action AWE and Trident Ploughshares, with the support of the European Antimilitarist Network. This last meant that many of the arrested had passports from states such as Finland, Belgium, Spain, Japan or Argentina.

There was division of labor for the action: the main road was cut by the hardened activists of the Conscientous Objection Movement (MOC), from the Spanish State, which in the past carried on the largest ever civil disobedience campaign in Europe. At least four were arrested.

The NW construction gate was blockaded by the Belgians, while the southern gate was blocked by the Scots.

Veteran activist of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Pat Arrowsmith, 83, was present and sent a message for the elimination of nuclear weapons, against which she has fought all her life, since 1958. Rebecca Johnson, who helped to create the Greenhan Commons antimilitarist camp in the 1980s was also present.

A Disarmament Camp has been held for a whole week near AWE Burghfeld.

A photo-gallery is available here, videos here.

Note: for those who are not familiar, the use of PVC pipes is meant to delay the dismantling of the human chain, which would otherwise be fairly easy. The activists risk their fingers or even hands by doing that.

Fascist USA: police violently arrest peaceful anti-war activist for no reason and keep her incommunicado

Emily Yates, a member of Iraq Veterans Against War, cried "this is a police state" as she was arrested and she could not be more correct. That's exactly how a police state looks like: you are arbitrarily and violently arrested for no reason whatsoever and you are kept incommunicado afterwards.

They call it "democracy" but it is not.

Video of the arrest:

According to the Emily Yates Defense Fund, which is raising money for her legal defense, she has not been allowed any communication with the outside world since she was arrested.

In fact we do not know even if she is alive at all, as the last we can watch in the video is how police agents choke her.

The incident happened in Philadelphia.

Turkey: the Islamist regime continues with repression as the masses march against war in Syria

At least 40 people were arrested in a journey of renewed protests, this time with the cause of peace. Again Gezi Park and Istiklal Avenue in Istanbul were the epicenter of protests and brutal fascist repression by police forces. The protest in Istanbul was not the only one, in the last weeks concentrations and marches have been spreading again through Turkey after a summer downtime, all them have been met with the brutal repression of a regime that calls itself "democratic" but obviously does not want to know what the word means.

Bradley Manning nominated for Peace Nobel

US Antimilitarists have gathered more than 100,000 signatures asking for the Nobel Prize of Peace to be given to US imprisoned dissident Bradley Manning, who helped to reveal the brutality of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and who, after suffering years of torture in the brutal military prisons of the Washington regime faces the equivalent to a life penalty in a trial with zero guarantees.

Norman Solomon, member of Roots Action, gave the 103,000 signatures to Nowegian MP and member of the Peace Prize committee Asle Toje. However he declared that: the Peace Nobel needs more Bradley Manning than Bradley Manning the Nobel Price. Nowadays there are many questions about the compromise of the Nobel Committee with human rights and peace in an equanimous and independent manner.

Kurdistan: Turkish Army fires against protesters near Diyarbakir: one killed, many wounded

A road blockade to protest against the opening of a new Turkish military station at Lice (Diyarbakir province, Northern Kurdistan) was brutally quelled by the Army of the Islamist and Imperialist regime with live fire, killing Salih Bedirxan Medeni Yildirim and injuring at least seven others.

There have been protests in Istanbul in solidarity with the massacred Kurds.

Update (Jun 29):

The funeral for the mortal victim has been held today at a Diyarbakir cementery.

A popular assembly has been called in Beksitas for 5pm in order to march to Taksim Square. Similarly the Democratic Congress of the Peoples (HDK) has called for a concentration at 6pm at the Galatasaray Lisesi in protest for the Lice massacre with the intention to march to Taksim Square as well. Taksim Solidarity will also held a demonstration at Taksim Square at 7pm with in homage to Sarisuluk (a worker murdered in Ankara weeks ago), in demand of justice against police and in solidarity with the imprisoned comrades.

Sicilians fight against planned US ultra-high frequency radar

From Struggles in Italy:

Ten thousand demonstrate against MUOS in Sicily

Movimento-NO-MUOS-e1355607357263Around 10,000 people demonstrated on March 30 in Niscemi near Caltanissetta in Sicily against the proposed creation of the M.U.O.S. (Mobile User Objective System), a ultra-high-frequency satellite network to serve the US Navy.

The rally was opened by children from the local elementary school and their mothers, who formed a protest committee earlier this year. The Mothers Against MUOS, as they call themselves, have fiercely opposed the projects with pickets (including one at the City Hall of Niscemi), occupations and road blockades over the past three months. Their tenacity has earned them criminal charges (including resisting arrest and damage to property). Attempts at criminalizing the movement have resulted in alarm about “possible infiltration by vandals” and in the discovery of “vandalizing tools” on March 14, 2013. “We are not black blocs (anarchist protesters), we are concerned moms and we want our children to be safe,” responded the Mothers against MUOS committee.

(...)

Based on ultra-high frequency (UHF), MUOS was meant to replace the current system of communications (known as UFO) and to provide an enhanced communications service to mobile users, including drone pilots. Niscemi, 60 km south-east of the US base of Sigonella, is one of the system’s four strategic stations. The other three stations are located in Western Australia, Southeast Virgina and Hawaii. Lockheed Martin is the project’s developer and main contractor.

High power broadcast transmitters at mobile frequencies are the source of concern among the local residents, who fear cancer-inducing effects and other health hazards. The environmental impact of the station is also a source of concern. Niscemi is home to “la Sughereta”, a nature reserve containing one of the few wild cork oak woods still left in the country. Ironically, Sughereta is exactly the area where the MUOS station would be placed. With its satellite transmitters, MUOS would therefore violate the landscape protection act, which forbids the erection of high-voltage pylons, cables and other high-impact structures in the area. (As it happens, conveniently the boundaries of the reserve were moved in 2012 in order to make room for the project.)

Austerity? For military expenditure!

While pensions, education, healthcare, social services... are all being demolished on the alleged austerity drive in Europe, a sector that is almost never affected is the military. Yet we all know it's the most useless one and certainly costly.

Basque labor unionists protested yesterday in Bilbao precisely against military waste under the slogan: let us improve public healthcare, no to military expenditure!

In the infamous Kingdom of Spain healthcare budget has been slashed this year by 22%, social services and subsidies by 20% and education 15%. Meanwhile the budget of the Ministry of Defense (defense against whom?) was increased 11%, from €7.7 billion to €8.6 billion!!!

The Western Basque Country pays as tribute (cupo or share) to Spain just for the military wastage and (undesired) occupation nothing less than €553 millions!!!

The Kingdom of Spain owes to the military industry €32 billion!!!

Austerity my ass!!!

USA: anti-nuclear grafitti becomes "sabotage" in US courts

Three anti-nuclear activists have been charged with sabotage of the national defense for painting graffiti and throwing some blood against the wall of a highly secretive uranium storage facility at Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

The three activists, Greg Boertje-Obed, Michael Walli and Sister Megan Rice (this one a Catholic nun aged 82) "sabotaged" the facility by writing "The fruit of Justice is Peace" and throwing some blood against a wall of the military facility.

This could be alleged to be vandalism but "sabotage"?!

Well, the US General Attorney's office thinks so and the three have been charged with the felony crime of injuring national-defense premises under the Sabotage Act. If found guilty, they could be sent to prison for 20 years.

The activists, organized in the Transform Now Plowshares group, accuse the US Government of being the actual criminal for building the nuclear weapons to begin with.

They have issued the following communication:

Our consciences compelled us to act at Y-12 Oak Ridge nuclear facility because we knew that the nuclear weapons of mass destruction illegally produced there threaten the well-being of our entire planet. The government and Babcock and Wilcox [a contractor that manages the Y-12 nuclear weapons plant] know these weapons can only be used to inflict massive death and injury on people and on our planet.

The Government threatened to charge us with the more serious crime of sabotage if we did not plead guilty. We chose to exercise our constitutional right to a jury trial and refused to bow down to their threats. So the government has added serious new charges which expose us to an additional twenty years in prison for our peacemaking actions.

We remain convinced that making and refurbishing nuclear weapons at Y-12 is both illegal under US and international law and it is also immoral. Ultimately we are required to follow the law of love and our consciences.

Our present activities include daily community prayer, study of the Nuremberg trials, and public education about the existence of illegal nuclear weapons of mass destruction.

We look forward to presenting evidence to the jury of the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth about what goes on at Y-12.

Refusing to be conscripted by the Apartheid regime in Palestine

While traditionally Muslim and Christian Palestinians, as well as Fundamentalist (Hasidic) Jews, are exempt from conscription into the colonial army (IDF), the Druze minority of Gallilee are not. One of such recruits however will not go.

From IMEMC News:

To the Israeli Prime Minister,
To the “Defense Minister”,
Subject: refusal to appear for compulsory military recruitment.

I’m the undersigned, Omar Zahr Eldin Mohammad Saad from the village of Mughar – Galilee, have received a notice to appear in the military recruitment offices on 31.10.2012 to conduct tests according to the conscription law imposed on the Druze community. I would like to make the following points:

I refuse to appear for tests, because I oppose the law of conscription imposed on my Druze community. I refuse because I am a man of peace and I hate all forms of violence, and the military institution represents for me the peak of physical and psychological violence. Since I received the notice to appear for tests, my life has changed, I became more nervous, my thoughts were distracted, I remembered thousands of cruel images, and I couldn’t imagine myself wearing military uniform and participating in the suppression of my Palestinian people or fighting my Arab brothers. I oppose the recruitment to the Israeli military and any other military for conscience and nationalistic reasons. I hate the injustice and oppose the occupation; I hate intolerance and restriction of freedoms. I hate those who detain children, the elderly and women.

I am a musician, I play the Viola , I have played in many places, I have musician friends from Ramallah, Jericho, Jerusalem, Hebron, Nablus, Jenin, Shfa’amr, Eilabun, Rome, Athens, Amman, Beirut, Damascus, Oslo, and we all play for freedom, humanity and peace, our weapon is the music and we shall not have any other weapon.

I am from a community that was unjustly treated by an unjust law, how can we fight our relatives in Palestine, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon? How can I hold arms against my brothers and people in Palestine? How can I be a soldier standing at Qalandia checkpoint or any other checkpoint, after I experienced the injustices at these checkpoints? How can I prevent someone from Ramallah to visit his city, Jerusalem? How can I guard the apartheid wall? How can I be a jailer to my own people while I know that the majority of prisoners are freedom prisoners and seekers of rights and freedom?

I play for joy, for freedom, for a just peace based on halting settlements, the end of the occupation in Palestine, the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem its capital, the release of all prisoners in prisons and the return of displaced refugees to their homes.

Many of the youth from my community have done the compulsory service in the army, what have we received? Discrimination in all areas, our villages are the poorest, our lands were confiscated, there are no master plans, and no industrial zones. Percentages of university graduates in our villages of the lowest in the region, the unemployment rates in our villages are the highest. This mandatory law has kept us away from our Arab connection.

This year, I will finish high school, and I seek to complete my university education. I’m sure you will try to make me concede my human ambition, but I announce it loudly:

I’m Omar Zahr Eldin Mohammad Saad will not be the fuel to the fire of your war, and will not be a soldier in your army .

Very large anti-war demo in Istanbul

Thousands of protesters marched though Istanbul against war: war against Syria and war against the Kurdish People.

Demonstrators held an evening gathering in Taksim square to protest the new act of the Turkish military after the bombings against Syria (in early October). Then, the anti-war march passed though central streets and ended in Galatasaray square, where people carried out a sit-in demonstration.

Spain: growing military and police budgets

While there are budgetary cuts for every sector, the Armed Forces are instead being well fed in what the Basque antimilitarist committee Gasteizkoak compares to a military coup against the populace and their interests. While everything else is cut down brutally, no matter if its pensions or solar energy, the Armed Forces and the Police are totally unscathed (at most with purely aesthetic retouches).

They also warn to the very unusual accumulation of military voices, very specially against Catalan independence, in what seems a clear attempt to take the power back into military hands.

In 2012 alone the real military budget has grown 40% by means of extraordinary credits which total € 2,537 billion. These include € 755 billion for foreign missions (notably Afghanistan but also Bosnia and Kosovo), while € 1,783 were approved, in the very eve of the two-million demo of Barcelona for Catalan independence, to buy new weaponry, in what Gazteizkoak interpret as an attempt to limit military discontent by buying new toys for the angry kids.

The situation is similar in the Police Forces, which are the only state body that has offered new employment (45,300 new jobs in the National Police and Guardia Civil) in 2012 and will repeat in 2013 according to all predictions.

In the Western Basque Country, some 520 new regional police have been recruited in the last few years as well. The Interior Department (essentially: police) has seen its budget cut since 2009 in a mere € 29 million, a totally symbolic amount.

Gasteizkoak also denounces the military industry, which they denounce as useless and parasitic, being the only sector with a clear growth in these times of crisis. A clear sign that public budget, even if camouflaged, has not decreased at all for the weaponry industry. Among them are Basque companies ITP, Sener and Sapa, whose profits have grown strongly in the crisis.

Spain to sell up to 600 tanks to the Saudi fascist regime

Leopard 2 tanks (Germany)
As many as maybe 600 Leopard 2 tanks are what the Spanish twin party regime is planning to sell to the worst religious fundamentalist tyranny on Earth, Saudi Arabia. The last time that this fascist monarchy used the army it was to invade its small neighbor, Bahrain, and quell the peaceful citizen protests for democracy.

Previously the Saudi regime was in negotiations with Germany but in the Central European country opposition was outspoken forcing Merkel to withdraw their offer. Instead in Spain, in yet another indication of the residual situation of the democratic system, the alleged social-liberal opposition of the PSOE has quietly supported the sale.

It is however an illegal sale, because it violates the common position of the European Union on weapon sales, which members are legally bound to respect. The common position does not allow the sale to the Saudi regime because human rights are systematically violated in the purchasing state and because it is a danger for regional peace and security (intervention in Bahrain and indirectly in Iraq, Syria, etc., continuous threats to Iran, active alliance with the Zionist regime to perpetrate genocide in Gaza...)

Colombia: Natives kick out the Army

Women and children of the Nasa people of Western Colombia have forced out the mightiest Army of South America with sharpened sticks and bad temper. The citizens, tired of the abuses of the military decided to remove them from the hill position they had been occupying for the last many years near Toribío, as is apparent in this Al Jazeera video:

Source: Al Jazeera (notice that the information given is quite misleading as cocaine traffickers are in fact part of the Colombian mafia-state, while the FARC does not traffic with drugs, still I found the images self-explainatory in spite of all the lies of Emir Hamad).

The people throws class war against militarism in Greece's national day

In spite of the massive deployment of police to defend the military parades, the people of the troubled Balcanic country has not felt intimidated by the illegitimate IMF government show of force and went out to clash with the police and force the military buffoonery into a halt.

Crete has been so far one of the most active areas and this case was not different: the military parade through the capital Heraklion had to be canceled. An anti-memorandum demo was held in its place.

Images from Crete TV:

In Patras the parade was held only thanks to massive use of tear gas and police violence. As soon as it ended, the cops were forced to retreat.

Probably there is much more going on. I just do not know yet.

Update: Contra Info reports of police raid in the Autonomous Hangout (occupied social center?) Baruti, in the town of Veria (Macedonia), confiscating everything they could find (furniture, books, posters). 26 or 29 people were arrested and charged with "insulting authority" and "posession of weapons" (not reported anywhere to exist at all, maybe a pocket knife?). At least 400 police agents took over Veria today.

Echoes from the Class War (Sep 10) - Spanish political repression against Basques

Basque Country: political repression continues and even grows:

Five activists of the internationalist movement Askapena (just because of being part of it: that's our 'democracy'!): Walter Wendelin, Gabi Basañez, Unai Vázquez, David Soto and Aritz Ganboa are the victims of political trial. Uberka Bravo, Itsaso Lekuona, Rubén Sánchez, Aitziber Martínez de Lagos, Beatriz Ilardia, Humberto Trapero and Naroa Iturri were acquitted in the early hearings but fascist platform Justicia y Dignidad wants bertsolari Rubén Sánchez again in court, maybe for his cultural profile ··> Ateak Ireki[es].

Basque citizen Josu Esparza arrested by France on Spanish request but let free the next day, while the issue goes to court. He is accused of belonging to ghost organization Ekin, a supposed link between ETA and the popular movement, imagined (never proven in any way) by Spanish police in the eve of the political persecution wave that began in the late 90s. His true 'crime' is to be active in the movement of solidarity with the Basque prisoners ··> Ateak Ireki[es].

Demonstration called for tomorrow at Pamplona against the trial of 11 local youths to be held in October. The Inquisition's victims are being asked 10 years of prison each just for being freely organized (no other particular accusation exists: just to be members of Segi, to have political material, to take part in meetings and to take part in the student movement) ··> SA[es].

Spanish Army takes the Txindoki mountain every weekend. The peak, a popular destination for trekkers, is being hijacked for no apparent reason at all, week after week by the Spanish military and their police network. Also a military airplane sparked fear in the Goierri by flying crossing the sound barrier at low altitude ··> SA[es].

Daniel and Xabier Saralegi on trial for alleged 'threats' to escorts. They may be 'ostracized' from their own home for a whole year. They share the apartments' bloc in Pamplona with a city councilor of a Spanish Nationalist party who uses escorts (either policemen or security guards), they never had any issue with the councilor but the escorts, true paramilitary forces in your stairs, are always threatening and pushing the neighbors around. In one of these provocations, they told the escort that "it was enough", to "leave us alone". The escort claims that they made a gesture like clicking on a TV remote control. This trial highlights both the extreme repression that we Basques have to face on day to day basis and also how the Spanish law and tribunals do not protect the presumption of innocence, specially when the accuser is a policeman or akin ··> Ateak Ireki[es].

Adolfo Ares, illegitimate Interior Councilor, threatens Basques with the most severe anti-terrorist repression if we dare to interrupt  the Spanish clone of The Tour, La Vuelta, which is perceived as an imposition and as more institutional violence against the weak Peace Process (after all many may think that ETA was worth it if only because it keep this kind of Spanish Nationalist impositions at bay) ··> SA[es].

Nice collage-video with beautiful light folk music of protests at punished town of Leitza aganist the trial of neighbors Oier Eizmendi, Saioa Iraola and Lurdes Juantorena (from Ateak Ireki[eu]):

The banners read:
  • Occupation forces out of Leitza
  • Audiencia Nacional Stop!
  • I am Basque and I am proud!
  • Go People's Movement! Leave Leitza in peace!
  • Solidarity is not a crime
  • Building our village/people/nation ('herria'). Go Leitza!
  • Above all obstacles, go Leitza!
  • Solidarity with the accused. The people [is] with you!
  • Occupation forces out of Leitza
  • Leave Leitza in peace! Go away! [and the arrow showing the road to the South]
  • Work stop in Leitza on September 8th from 12:00 to 14:00. All to the streets. Leave Leitza in peace.

Navarre: hundreds demand referendum on Bardeak

In yet another edition of the March to Bardeak (Bardenas Reales, a natural park in Southern Navarre used and abused by the Air Forces of Spain and other NATO states) the participants demanded a referendum of compulsory implementation on the future of the military polygon.

Also Gladys del Estal, Basque ecologist murdered by the Spanish police in the march of 1979, was remembered.
