Fukushima news

Fukushima emergency... blog has today a batch of more info, unavoidably bad news, on the ongoing nuclear disaster of Japan. I'm just listing a few here, if you really want to know please follow the specialist blogs and sites.

Fifth reactor under serious problems

On one side reactor number 5, originally spared, from the catastrophe is now under major cooling problems, with no solution in sight. This has been ongoing for a week or more now but the it becomes more and more serious as the situation is not being brought under control in any non-provisional way.

Offshore dumping sites around Japan hit by earthquakes

In the map to the right it seems surprisingly obvious that these offshore dumping areas for radioactive and other highly toxic materials are right on top of major fault lines. So good for those who trust the engineers' qualification and seriousness.

On the other hand it underlines that radioactive pollution in the North Pacific Ocean is probably not only caused by Fukushima but also for a whole half century of nuclear madness, which has left lots of residues on land but also under the sea.

Independent researchers are prevented from investigating the radioactivity around Japan and only governments and the UN agency IAEA (under tight control by the Nuclear Lobby) are allowed to do so.

Fukushima radiation in Philippines: no dose is "harmless"

Dr. Romeo F. Quijano writes from Philippines reporting that the authorities have finally acknowledged that Fukushima fallout has reached the country, although they are minimizing its importance. Excerpt:
For the past several years, health research on the effects of ionizing radiation exposure has focused on estimating the number of excess radiation-induced fatal cancers and excess severe genetic diseases to be expected in a population given the average estimated exposure to radiation for the country. Other radiation-related human tragedies such as earlier occurrence of cancers, endocrine disorders, immune dysfunction, developmental disorders, and other illnesses are not included. This averaging approach also fails to deal with global distribution of air and water with the result that deaths and the cumulative damage to future generations are not limited to one country.

The painful human experience from ionizing radiation since the US dropped nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 has stimulated a tremendous growth in understanding the harmful effects of ionizing radiation on the human body, despite the official suppression of independent scientific data by the nuclear powers. Thanks to independent scientists, we now know that radiation has no safe level.

As early as 1955, Dr. Alice Stewart. who was head of the Department of Preventative Medicine at Oxford University, discovered that the number of children dying of leukemia had risen 50% in only a few years. She determined that babies born to mothers who had a series of maternal X-rays of the pelvic region during pregnancy were twice as likely to develop leukemia or cancer as babies of mothers who had not been X-rayed. These diagnostic X-rays exposed the patient to extremely low doses of radiation. Other researchers have since verified these findings and have shown the number of mutations to be in direct ratio to the amount of radiation received by the reproductive organs.

In 1970, Dr. Thomas Mancuso, a professor of occupational health at the University of Pittsburgh, was commissioned by the Atomic Energy Commission to study the “biological effects, if any, of low-level ionizing radiation among workers employed in atomic energy facilities”. It was expected that Mancuso’s study would find that nuclear work was safe. However, Dr. Mancuso's team found a definite relationship between low levels of radiation and the development of certain types of cancer in spite of the fact that all workers employed were specifically selected for their excellent health. They discovered three kinds of cancers among the workers: lung cancer, pancreatic cancer and cancers of blood-forming tissues, particularly Myeloma. The cancers were occurring at well below the radiation exposure levels of the official limit of five rads per year. This meant that the current standards for nuclear safety might be twenty times too high. However, there were powerful forces who suppressed the research. Mancuso’s funding was cut off and he was ordered not to publish his findings. He was denied further access to the workers’ data. In 1977 he was ordered to give up his files or have them seized.  Practically everyone who sided with Mancuso were subjected to character assassination or lost their funding. The government would only allow studies of workers health records to be performed by labs under them. The data of workers health became the virtual monopoly of a small group of government sponsored scientists and were unavailable to the larger scientific community.

Fukushima women demand government resignations

Fukushima Women against Nukes have demanded in press conference the resignation of Environment Minister Nobuteru Ishihara as well as a sensible change in the government policies about nuclear pollution and, particularly, its effect on children.

They also denounce the obscurantism and shameless cheating of the Government in measuring radiation and evaluating the danger it poses for the population.

They also feel extremely upset for the lack of support by the authorities to the nuclear refugees.

They denounce that the Government is only concerned with hiding the problem.

WHO blocks report on cancer in Iraq

Map of the 2010 Iraqi report
The World Health Organization has blocked, against its mandate, the release of a report on cancer and birth malformations in Iraq. The damages, attributed to the use of weapons of mass destruction by the USA, be them chemical weapons, depleted uranium or even, some have claimed, a real nuclear bomb dropped near Basra in the early 90s, seem to be really alarming for the WHO to act this way.

Whatever the case the UN organization is morally and legally obliged to release this report. Blocking the information is a clear act of complicity with genocide.

A previous report by the Iraqi government in 2010 highlighted the massive damages, mostly attributed to depleted uranium, as well as the pollution caused by the destruction of oil facilities.

Radioactive Japan's slippery slope: mafias and fascism

Two snippets of the rapidly deteriorating situation in Japan:

On one side Fukushima emergency... mentions that there was a mafioso mass dumping of radioactive materials in a river bed in Western Japan:

A huge amount of contaminated waste was found on the river bed in Shiga prefecture, western region of Japan.
According to the local authorities, among the waste include 2,300 tons of wooden tips contaminated by radiation as well as 77 sandbags filled with the same contaminated wooden tips.

The incident was came to light after an anonymous informant, possibly related to the illegal dumping, called in last month. The survey conducted by the local office shows up to 3000 becquerel per kilogram was detected.

"This is a possible illegal dumping case, though the place where they were brought from remain unknown." the authorities said.

Fascist repression against truth

(CC by Masaru Kamikura)
On the other side, actress (and former Miss Japan) Norika Fujiwara (pictured) has stepped forward against the implementation of fascist censorship laws that will severely punish whistleblowing and bring punishments against bloggers who expose the truth about the nuclear catastrophe, mentions EneNews, citing Japanese sources (→ Japan Times).

The new law, known as Secret Security Act, allows government to hide important information like radiation readings, to severely punish whistleblowing officials and even to exert censorship on the Internet at whim.
In a message posted on Friday, Fujiwara accused the government of covering up the truth about the crisis at the Fukushima nuclear plant, and spreading misinformation about radiation and leaks of radioactive water there.

“As a citizen I am really concerned about it,” Fujiwara wrote in another message. “Our nation has a right to know.”

Fujiwara joins the Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association in opposing the bill as a violation of the right to freedom of speech that will undermine Japan’s democracy.

“Once the bill is signed, the people who will write the truth on the Internet (or through other means) will be punished,” she stressed. “When I think of all the consequences that it will lead to, it really bothers me.”

Oil spill threatens Corsica

A 40 km long oil spill threatens the island of Corsica and in particular the Natural Reserve of Scandola, World Heritage (UNESCO). The source of the spill is unknown but probably originate in some oiler ship which decided to clean up its tanks, illegally, at the sea.

It is estimated that only 10-20% of the sheen are hydrocarbons, what may somewhat limit the impact. Whatever the case if the NE winds continue the spill will hit Corsica in few days.

Japan: nuclear accident in Ibaraki exposes dozens

I guess it's almost trivial when you live in the vicinity of the worst nuclear catastrophe ever but a so-called Hadron Experimental Facility in Tokai, just north of Tokyo, had an accident today that released a soup of radioactive materials to outside the building, exposing at least 30 researchers and a provisional total of more than 50 people.

The various nuclear facilities of Tokai have suffered several serious accidents in the last two decades.

Bisphenol A severely disrupts fetal epigenetics

Water bottle containing bisphenol A
The most controversial chemical compound bisphenol A is found in many plastics, including sometimes those used as food or water containers. This study adds to the long list of known harms of this chemical, which nevertheless remains widely allowed.

Martha Susiarjo et al., Bisphenol A Exposure Disrupts Genomic Imprinting in the Mouse. PLoS Genetics 2013. Open access → LINK [doi:10.1371/journal.pgen.1003401]

Abstract

Exposure to endocrine disruptors is associated with developmental defects. One compound of concern, to which humans are widely exposed, is bisphenol A (BPA). In model organisms, BPA exposure is linked to metabolic disorders, infertility, cancer, and behavior anomalies. Recently, BPA exposure has been linked to DNA methylation changes, indicating that epigenetic mechanisms may be relevant. We investigated effects of exposure on genomic imprinting in the mouse as imprinted genes are regulated by differential DNA methylation and aberrant imprinting disrupts fetal, placental, and postnatal development. Through allele-specific and quantitative real-time PCR analysis, we demonstrated that maternal BPA exposure during late stages of oocyte development and early stages of embryonic development significantly disrupted imprinted gene expression in embryonic day (E) 9.5 and 12.5 embryos and placentas. The affected genes included Snrpn, Ube3a, Igf2, Kcnq1ot1, Cdkn1c, and Ascl2; mutations and aberrant regulation of these genes are associated with imprinting disorders in humans. Furthermore, the majority of affected genes were expressed abnormally in the placenta. DNA methylation studies showed that BPA exposure significantly altered the methylation levels of differentially methylated regions (DMRs) including the Snrpn imprinting control region (ICR) and Igf2 DMR1. Moreover, exposure significantly reduced genome-wide methylation levels in the placenta, but not the embryo. Histological and immunohistochemical examinations revealed that these epigenetic defects were associated with abnormal placental development. In contrast to this early exposure paradigm, exposure outside of the epigenetic reprogramming window did not cause significant imprinting perturbations. Our data suggest that early exposure to common environmental compounds has the potential to disrupt fetal and postnatal health through epigenetic changes in the embryo and abnormal development of the placenta.

Japan: TEPCO will dump 50 times the legal limit of radioactive water to the Ocean

Fukushima Diary reports:

Tepco is going to discharge contaminated water to the sea. (cf, Tepco officially announced to discharge contaminated water into Pacific ocean [URL])

Tepco states the discharged water will be purified by the purifying facility “Alps”, but it can’t filter out the nuclide called “tritium”. Tritium is radioactive water.
It is estimated that the water contains 2,000 ~ 3,000 Bq/ml of tritium even after purification, which is 33 ~ 50 times much as the legal limit to discharge.

Tepco comments they will dilute it before discharging but the total amount of tritium would be the same.

Very worrying radiation levels in California and other places in the USA

Fukushima Emergency what can we do? has a series of posts these days on the apparent impact of Fukushima radioactive contamination across the Ocean in continental USA.

This image shows peaks of above 1000 counts per minute at Bakersfield, California, between October and November 2012 (100 CPM is considered alert):

In successive posts, the same blog shows EPA sanctioned graphs with levels of c. 100 CPM at Anchorage, Alaska and c. 200 CPM at Los Angeles, California for a similar period.

See at Fukushima Emergency what can we do?:

Update: also on Canada (similar situation to continental USA).

Huge stinky chemical cloud floating over France and England

A leak at a chemical plant in Rouen (France) has caused a huge cloud that smells of rotten eggs. While the French authorities claim it's harmless, people in the Normand city are already complaining of migraines, irritation and nausea. London authorities recommend to keep windows closed.

Lubrizol, the company owner of the leaking facility, claims it is methanethiol, a gas that smells to rotten cabbages and that is responsible for bad breath in human metabolism. In industry it is used mostly to give some smell to gases otherwise hard to detect.

Hopefully it will be as harmless as authorities say but nobody seems able to prevent the stench, a major nuisance in any case. The cloud has reached as far as Paris and London already.

Turkey begins testing all food imported from Japan

Every single food product entering Turkey from Japan needs since yesterday a document of approval by the Turkish Atomic Energy Organization (← source).

When will EU? The other day I found Japanese green tea from Fukushima at an ecological shop. The owner assured me that it was produced or imported before the nuclear catastrophe but how do I know if all efforts from Japan are in the direction on conceiting and not revealing radioactive contamination and that EU remains low key on the matter of radioactive control, being necessary only for food produced in certain regions.

I'm also concerned about non-food products (Japanese radioactive cars or spare parts were blocked at several harbors worldwide for being too radioactive) and about products from the USA and Canada, where the radioactive pollution from Japan had a significant impact (less than in Japan itself, of course, but surely much more than in mainland East Asia).

Hawaii: uranium in urine

Hawaiian citizens protested the military testing of the so-called depleted uranium weapons in their territory (or anywhere else). They blame these tests and the lack of clean up after them for the finding of uranium in the urine of residents of the Pacific Islands.

USA: St. Louis citizens were "guinea pigs" for radioactive experiments

Research into formerly classified documents has brought both Missouri senators to demand official explanations. Apparently the US Army sprayed some working class buildings in St. Louis (Missouri) with radioactive powder, affecting their residents who were mostly black children in a cruel experiment comparable to those of the infamous Doctor Mengele.

The reports tell of great increase of lung cancers in the affected areas.

The experiment was conducted with the help of infamous company US Radium, guilty of many other cases of radiation poisoning.

Russia unveals huge sea nuclear dump

(CC by NormanEinstein)
A nuclear submarine (the K-27) with spent fuel in both reactors, 14 nuclear reactors, some of them with fuel, 19 ships containing radioactive waste, 17,000 containers full of radioactive waste, 735 other pieces of radioactively contaminated machinery.

All that and maybe more was dumped in the Kara Sea, a subdivision of the Arctic Ocean bordering Nenets lands. The data has been revealed to Norwegian environmentalist NGO Bellona by Russian authorities in the last two years and now published by Norwegian media.

Bellona has been tracking the case since 1992 and praised the openness of the Russian government. Meanwhile the Norwegian nuclear authorities suspect that this may not be all because Russia has been generally reluctant to reveal this massive environmental crime, revealing the data only gradually.

There is concern that the reactors of the K-27 could achieve recriticality but of course the greatest concern is radioactive contamination of the Arctic.

Argentina: where Monsanto has license to kill

As you may know, pseudo-leftist developist governments like those of Brazil or Argentina are among the ones more corrupted by the bioterrorist business of Monsanto and the other GMO mafiosi.  Their star product is transgenic soy, which has been massively planted through much of Argentina and Brazil.

This alleged high-production brand bases all its power in a gene that makes it immune to the pesticide Roundup, trade-marked and sold by the North American multinational itself.

Sadly we, humans, do not have the immunity gene and are getting sick, literally poisoned as collateral damage, by the agricultural mafiosi, their godfather Monsanto and their facilitator President Cristina Fernández and her populist Justicialist Party (Peronist).

Since the infamous agrobusiness began, more and more people are getting sick because of the pollution caused by the Roundup pesticide, which is sprayed from airplanes without consideration for anyone.  The citizens get malformations, cancers, leukemia, lupus, spontaneous abortions, cleft palate, etc. as result of the contamination, the ranchers, Monsanto and the Kirchnerist opportunist caste get the money.

Protest in Córdoba against GMO farming

But of course the conflict does not only cause poisoning, it also kills in more direct ways, with bullets and other brutal methods. Ranchers' death squads have murdered the following people only in the last years:
  • Javier Chocobar, shot down by corrupt police officers at the service of a businessman wanting to appropriate a quarry inside communal lands, October 12th 2009 in Chuchagasta (Tucumán).
  • Sandra Juárez, 33, mother of two, killed by a bulldozer in a civil resistance action on March 13th 2010 in San Nicolás (Santiago del Estero).
  • Roberto López, member of the Potae Napocna Navogoh community (La Primavera, Formosa), shot down by policemen on November 23rd 2010.
  • Cristian Ferreyra, 23, activist of the Movimiento Campesino Santiago del Estero, murdered on Novemeber 16th 2011 at San Antonio.

Personally I try not to eat any soy nor maize not certified as organic, I carefully read ingredient labels when buying foodstuff like sausages, which are typically made of soy, but it's obviously not enough.
